Elizabeth Hinton is a historian of American inequality and is considered one of the nation’s leading experts on policing and mass incarceration. She earned her B.A. from New York University and her Ph.D. from Columbia University and is a professor of history, African American Studies, and law at Yale. Hinton’s articles and op-eds can be found in the pages of The New York Times, The Atlantic, Time, and the Los Angeles Times, and she has worked as a consultant on documentary films and television series. Her book, From the War on Poverty to the War on Crime: The Making of Mass Incarceration in America, received widespread acclaim and was named a New York Times notable book and one of Oprah Magazine’s “Books to Better Understand the History of Racism in America.”
